How to Choose the Right Rack and Pinion Gear Motor
How to Choose the Right Rack and Pinion Gear Motor
Follow this selection process to match the motor to your application:
Step 1: Determine Motion Direction
Vertical (Up/Down): Choose Lifting Type.
Horizontal (Left/Right, Forward/Back): Choose Translating Type.
Step 2: Assess Safety Requirements
Vertical and holding load required? Choose Lifting Type with Brake.
Horizontal or vertical without holding requirement? Standard Lifting or Translating type is sufficient.
Step 3: Calculate Required Thrust
Thrust (or linear force) depends on the motor torque, gear ratio, and pinion radius.
Formula: Thrust = (Motor Torque × Gear Ratio × Efficiency) / Pinion Radius
Step 4: Determine Rack Length and Module
The rack module must match the pinion gear. Standard modules are M1 to M3. The rack length determines your total travel distance (stroke).
Step 5: Select Voltage and Control
Choose 1PH 220V for standard industrial outlets.
Choose 3PH 380V for high-power, continuous industrial use.
Select "R" (Speed Control) models if variable speed is needed.
Common Applications for Linear Gear Motors
| Industry | Application | Recommended Type |
|---|---|---|
| Automation | Automated guided vehicles (AGV) steering | Translating |
| Logistics | Pallet transfer shuttles | Translating |
| Architecture | Automatic sliding doors, gates | Translating |
| Stage & Entertainment | Stage lifts, curtain tracks | Lifting with Brake |
| Medical | Patient transfer lifts, adjustable beds | Lifting with Brake |
| Industrial | Scissor lift tables, vertical conveyors | Lifting with Brake |
| Food & Beverage | Diverting mechanisms on conveyors | Translating |

right angle reducer Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: What happens if I use a standard lifting motor without a brake?
A: Under power loss, the load may slide down due to gravity. A brake-equipped motor is essential for safety-critical vertical applications.
Q2: Can the stroke length be customized?
A: Yes. The rack is cut to your required length. We can provide racks from a few hundred millimeters up to several meters.
Q3: Is the translating type capable of vertical movement?
A: While mechanically possible, the translating type is designed for horizontal loads. For vertical movement, always choose the lifting type to ensure proper bearing support and safety.
Q4: Can I control the speed of the linear gear motor?
A: Yes. Choose a speed control motor (R suffix) and pair it with an external controller. For three-phase models, a VFD can be used.
Q5: What is the maximum load capacity?
A: Load capacity varies by motor power, gear ratio, and pinion size. Our 400W models can typically push/pull several hundred kilograms horizontally. Contact us with your specific load for a calculation.
