Frequent starts and stops generate thermal stress and peak torque loads that standard gearboxes may not handle.

Recommended Configuration:

●Lubricant: High-quality ISO VG 320 synthetic worm gear oil – reduces friction and heat generation

●Housing: Aluminum with enlarged cooling ribs – stabilizes operating temperature under full load

●Protection: Overload clutch or torque limiter – protects against startup shock loads 

Key Selection Criteria:

  • Worm gearboxes rely on natural air convection for cooling

  • Frequent starts = repeated peak torque at each start – must account for this in selection

  • Overload capacity: NMRV series offers high overload capacity

Service Factor Adjustment:

Frequent starts: apply higher service factor (1.5-2.0 depending on starts/hour)

Calculate thermal capacity before final selection

Maintenance:

Monitor operating temperature closely – install temperature sensor

Check for oil degradation more frequently – heat accelerates oxidation

Ensure breather plug is clear – pressure buildup causes seal failure

  • Undersizing for peak starting torque – start torque can be 2-3× running torque

  • Poor ventilation – enclosed spaces trap heat

  • Using mineral oil instead of synthetic – synthetic withstands higher thermal stress

Pro tip: For frequent start-stop applications, always select one frame size larger than the steady-state calculation suggests – thermal capacity, not mechanical capacity, is often the limiting factor
