What Oil Should You Use for Industrial Gearboxes? – Quick Selection Guide
Choosing the right oil is the simplest way to extend gearbox life and prevent costly breakdowns. Here‘s what you need to know
H1: Gear Oil vs Motor Oil – Which One?
Always use gear oil, not motor oil. Gear oils contain extreme pressure (EP) additives that protect gear teeth under heavy loads and sliding friction.
R/F/K Series (helical/bevel) : Standard gear oil
S Series (worm gear) : Synthetic gear oil preferred (higher sliding friction)
H2: How to Choose the Right Viscosity (ISO Grade)
Viscosity = oil thickness. Too thin → metal contact. Too thick → overheating.
Condition Recommended ISO VG
Standard industrial (R/F/K) VG 220
Worm gear (S series) VG 100 – 220
High temperature (>50°C) or heavy load VG 320 / 460
Low temperature (< -10°C) VG 68 – 100 (synthetic)
H2: 1Recommended Brands
| Brand | Series |
|---|---|
| Mobil | Mobilgear XMP / SHC 600 |
| Shell | Omala S2 GX / S4 GXV |
| Klüber | Klüberoil EG / Klübersynth GE |
1. Never mix brands – different additives can react.
2. Check oil level weekly – top up if below mark.
3. If oil turns dark or milky – change it immediately.
