Example – Selecting a 400W Gear Motor:

  • Motor power: 0.4 kW

  • Motor speed: 1400 RPM

  • Motor torque = 9550 × 0.4 ÷ 1400 ≈ 2.7 N.m

  • With 30:1 ratio and 92% efficiency:

  • Output torque ≈ 2.7 × 30 × 0.92 ≈ 74.5 N.m

Then compare this value against the manufacturer’s output torque table for the specific model

Torque Margin Recommendations:

Duty TypeRecommended Safety Margin
Smooth, steady operation (conveyors, fans, mixers)No extra margin needed – rated torque ≥ required torque
Frequent start/stop (index tables, lifts, palletizers)1.2 – 1.5× safety margin
Shock loads (crushers, punch presses)1.5× or higher safety margi
